What We Do
Paren(thesis) began to fix a problem that is becoming more evident in the world of literary culture: the disproportionate number of men to women being published in literary circles. With women making up roughly 50% of the global population, less women are actually being published. Publisher's Weekly announced their best books of 2013, and had only 2 female authors out of 10--an improvement from their 2009 list that included zero female authors--and even this troubling number fails to represent the fact that men are five times more likely to be published than their female counterparts.
Paren(thesis) saw the problem and set out to create a space where women are celebrated for their work, whether in poetry, fiction, blogs, or art. We are actively seeking to promote work from only female authors so we can level the imbalance.
Who We Are
Micah Farmer began her career in publishing working as a staff member for Verse Magazine. Verse's editor, Brian Henry, encouraged her to begin her own literary magazine in 2014, and shortly afterwards, Paren(thesis) was born. Its first edition was released in April 2014. Micah is the winner of the 2014 University of Richmond's Margaret Haley Carpenter Award for Poetry and the winner of the 2014 Academy of American Poets University Prize.
